Award-winning filmmaker Joshua Zeman continues to be one of the leading voices in documentary filmmaking and his latest documentary, Checkpoint Zoo, focuses on giving a voice to the voiceless.

As timely as ever, Checkpoint Zoo documents a daring rescue led by a heroic team of zookeepers and volunteers who risked their lives to save thousands of animals trapped in a zoo behind enemy lines during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Providing a unique perspective on the highly surveilled war, Checkpoint Zoo chooses to focus on the animals and people of the zoo – bringing to light the often-overlooked effects of war. This emotional watch is not for the faint of heart as Joshua doesn’t shy away from portraying the devastation of war while exploring our deep connection with animals.

With Checkpoint Zoo, Joshua and his film crew had exclusive and unrestricted access to Feldman Ecopark in Kharkiv, Ukraine as well as hundreds of hours of video and sound recordings that were captured by the park keepers and volunteers as they documented their evacuation.

Dubbed the “leading voice in the true-crime storytelling space,” Joshua has captivated audiences with documentaries such as Cropsey, “The Son of Sam: A Descent into Darkness”, “Murder Mountain” and The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52. He is most notably known for “The Killing Season” in which he investigated the Gilgo Beach serial killings, one of the most bizarre serial killer cases which was then unsolved – fast forward to 2023 when police finally settled the case arresting 59 year-old Rex Heuermann. Joshua, having done thorough investigation, is still a leading voice on the case.
