Director’s Statement: The Collective is my love letter to the throwback action films of the 90’s I grew up on. The goal was to give the audience a nonstop action-packed ride, from the opening sequence to the closing credits. My biggest focused was marrying good old fashioned practical special effects and precision engineered fight choreography, to give the viewer the most authentic display of action possible.
Having athletic performers like Lucas Till and of course international pro-wrestling superstar, Mercedes Mone (Varnado) take part in fight sequences, and do the majority of their own stunts, really leveled up the physicality of the film. The fights are vicious and violent, yet crisp and mechanically sophisticated.
We worked hard to include classic tropes audiences have grown accustom to seeing, while adding our own unique stamp to the traditional “shoot out” or “fight scene”. The “Pistol Puppet” adds something new, different, and exciting to help modernize the traditional style gun battle we’ve seen in so many action movies prior.
The right level of humor has always been a key component of the action movie genre. This was not lost in The Collective. The relationships between Sam (Lucas Till) Hugo (Tyrese Gibson) and Liam (Don Johnson) provide just enough comedy to keep the audience amused and engaged while maintaining the right level of severity intended. This combination of laughs and edge of your seat action are sure to leave the audience feeling satisfied and nostalgic for the action films of yesteryear.
