A Million Little Things star Romany Malco makes his directorial debut with his passion project film, Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison, hitting streaming platforms July 31st.
For those of you not familiar with Tijuana Jackson (TJ), he’s the larger-than-life alter-ego of Malco’s and has been the feature of his YouTube series called Prison Logic for almost 10 years. TJ currently has 52.7k subscribers to his YouTube channel all tuning in to hear inspiring words of wisdom, told as only Tijuana Jackson can.
The character is an “ex-convict turned motivational speaker.” He’s, “a life coach with a goon hand.” He tells it like it is, pulling inspiration from his past experiences in prison or from his unconventional childhood. He offers up spot-on, life-altering advice, and he’s hilariously inappropriate to boot. You can’t help but love TJ. I mean, honestly, what’s not to love?
Malco not only stars as the titular character but also writes, directs, and produces. He even spearheaded a crowdfunding campaign which raised over $200,000 to fund the film.
Tijuana Jackson: Purposes Over Prison also stars Regina Hall (Think Like a Man), Tami Roman (Basketball Wives), Alkoya Brunson (Almost Christmas), and Baadja-Lyne Odoms (The Lady Killers). The film was also produced by Josh Etting and Brian Etting.
Check out the official film synopsis and red band trailer below.
“Tijuana Jackson (ROMANY MALCO) is a man determined to move beyond his checkered past and achieve his ambition of becoming a world-renowned motivational speaker. When asked to be the subject of a 10-minute student film, TJ leaps at the opportunity. 10 minutes turns into 10 hours, and 10 hours become 10 life-altering days of courage and inspiration. Determined to be more than a statistic with a pipe dream, TJ stops at nothing to earn the respect of his family, and crush (REGINA HALL), who is currently his probation officer, by becoming the success story they claimed he’d never be. With a film crew in tow, Tijuana Jackson takes us on the ride of our lives in this laugh out loud comedy. Running from his past, he collides with his future and steps on every toe in the room as he does. Dropping golden nuggets of wisdom along the way, TJ attempts to master the art of achieving success by getting out of his own way!”
