The highly anticipated fourth installment of the Disney Descendants franchise is here! Descendants: The Rise of Red immediately tosses us down the rabbit hole to Wonderland, where we meet Red (Kylie Cantrall), the defiant daughter of the maniacal and cutthroat Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora).
Just as Red becomes more restless in Wonderland, Auradon Prep’s new Principal Uma (China Anne McClain) extends an invitation to the rebellious Princess in an effort to continue Mal (Dove Cameron) and Ben’s (Mitchell Hope) legacy of giving Villain Kids a chance to rise above the tyranny of their parents. Red leapt at the chance to ditch her devious mother and exchange her prison in Wonderland for a spot at the school dedicated to educating the next generation of fairytale heroes and villains. Unfortunately for Red and the people of Auradon, mommy dearest had other plans in mind and decided to stage a coup during orientation with the help of her whimsical deck of cards and henchmen.
The reluctant Red must team up with Cinderella (Brandy) and Prince Charming’s (Paolo Montalban) goody-two-shoes daughter Chloe (Malia Baker) to travel back in time and stop the Queen of Hearts from becoming, well, heartless. Not only is their time hopping a valiant effort to overcome her villainous upbringing and an effort to alter her strained relationship with her mother and stop her from becoming a villain, but a last ditch effort to save Cinderella in current times from the vengeful “off with your head” Queen.
Can Chloe and Red ultimately put aside their differences to save the people of Auradon and restore order to the school? What type of donut would Red be based on her personality? Will there be another movie, and if so– what’s next for the VKs? These are just a few of the burning questions we asked The Rise of Red star Kylie Cantrall ahead of the Descendants Disney+ premiere Friday, July 12, 2024.
Continuing the Disney Descendants legacy is no small feat, but the next gen of VK’s and heroes are up for the task. While the majority of the characters in this fourth film are new to the fans, we do get to briefly see fan-favorite characters such as Uma, and Fairy Godmother (Melanie Paxson), and even a very sweet and heartfelt nod to the late Cameron Boyce.
Now… who’s ready to go Red?
