Hulu’s The Great’s Elle Fanning will be playing Michelle Carter in the Universal Content Productions’ The Girl From Plainville.
You may remember the tragic story of Conrad Roy III, 18, who committed suicide in 2014 at the urging of his then girlfriend Michelle Carter, then 17. The tragedy made national news when it became clear that Carter was encouraging Roy to commit suicide through text message.
Hulu announced earlier this month that a series based on these events will be coming to the platform.
“The Girl From Plainville is considered the definitive account of the events that led Michelle Carter, a young woman from a small town in Massachusetts, to stand trial for her boyfriend Conrad Roy’s homicide, as prosecutors argued that her calls and texts fueled his suicide when they were both teens.”
Based off of the Esquire article of the same name by Jesse Barron, the series will explore the young relationship and the events leading up to the suicide as well as Carter’s involuntary manslaughter trial.
In 2017, she was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 15 months in prison. In January 2018, she was released from prison early for good behavior.
The series will be co-written by Liz Hannah (The Post) and Patrick Macmanus (Marco Polo), who will also serve as co-showrunners. Fanning herself, along with Brittany Kahan Ward will executive produce.
Barron will serve as a consulting producer along with Erin Lee Carr, who directed the HBO documentary I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth Vs. Michelle Carter. This documentary chronicled the details of the case and even featured court room footage.
A premiere date has not yet been released.
