Every year around October, I see one thing appear in my news feed: that we are getting a possible sequel on the Nightmare Before Christmas. Now, every time I get happy to see this news, but at the same time, I know that this is probably not going to happen. Ever. Do we actually need a sequel to this masterpiece anyway?
Let’s recap for a little bit. The Nightmare Before Christmas film came out in 1993 after Disney saw that they needed to give Tim Burton a chance to show what he can do for kids’ movies. They rejected so many of his animations when he got into Disney that he soon gave up the work for Disney. Especially after Burton said he felt like a ‘princess who was stuck in a tower‘ drawing all day for them after he graduated. So, they denied him to make a movie at first, but once Disney saw the success he had with a Frankenweenie short film, he was allowed to bring one of his creations to the studio. Yes, Nightmare Before Christmas is a Tim Burton creation, but the movie is directed by Henry Selick, who had a lot of help from his producer Tim Burton.
To this day, the Nightmare Before Christmas film still has a lot of success. Some people have been waiting for a sequel for years, just like the one for Beetlejuice. I’m sorry, but I’m going to burst your bubble: WE DON’T NEED A SEQUEL. There, I said it. We don’t need a sequel to a perfectly fine movie, which had a happy ending for everyone (maybe not for Oogie Boogie, but still). It wouldn’t make sense to make a sequel. Don’t get me wrong, if he announced it, I would jump right into the theaters when it is released, because I am the type that appreciates all movies he makes from his point of view.
