The horror genre has always been there, lurking in the shadows, but as of recent, has crept its way to the forefront, boasting main stream horror blockbusters with big name actors.
What still is lacking though are more Black horror films.
One of the first horror movies that features a Black lead actor dates back to 1968; The Night of the Living Dead. This film was groundbreaking for the positive and heroic portrayal of a Black man as the lead actor.
While in the past few years there have been notable horror films centering on Black lead actors including Get Out (2017), Us (2019), Ma (2019), Bad Hair (2020), and Antebellum (2020), overall, there is a clear lack of representation.
Enter AMC and Shudder’s Untitled Black Horror Anthology.
Here’s what we know so far.
The anthology is set to showcase stories of Black horror from Black directors and screenwriters. It will debut in 2021 on Shudder and AMC+, followed by a premier on AMC. It will feature work from both established and emerging talent. Some of writers on the project include NAACP Award-winning husband-and-wife duo Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep) and Steven Barnes (Lion’s Blood), and Victor LaValle (The Changeling). Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman (Horror Noire: Blacks in American Horror Films from the 1890s to Present) will be consulting on the anthology.
The anthology will be produced by Swirl Films.
