A conversation with ‘Mermaid’ creator, Tyler Cornack

Tyler Cornack’s latest film, Mermaid, is, in his words, a bizarre and personal love letter to Florida.

Tyler is an independent filmmaker, writer and director based in Los Angeles who is known for his bold, genre-blending style that mixes dark comedy, horror, surrealism, and social commentary. He prioritizes creative freedom, collaboration, and boundary-pushing content that appeals to fans of weird, auteur driven cinema.

He first gained recognition with his feature debut Butt Boy (2019), a cult-favorite comedy-crime-fantasy that earned a New York Times Critics’ Pick and topped John Waters’ list of the best films of the century. He followed with the anthology feature Tiny Cinema (2022), expanding his twisted, interconnected sketches. He also just finished production on Tom Segura’s debut feature film El Tigre, along with season two of “Bad Thoughts” at Netflix, all set to release in 2026.

Mermaid synopsis: A drug addicted Florida man finds a wounded mermaid at his lowest point. When word spreads about his secret, he’ll stop at nothing to protect her. The film stars Johnny Pemberton, Robert Patrick, Kevin Nealon, and Tom Arnold.
